Since I was a young girl, I can remember my mama speaking over my sisters and I. She always reminded us how she asked God to help her raise us. That we wouldn’t be able to just be ordinary girls, we would set apart and not follow the crowd, and we would make something of ourselves. Now she didn’t think we were better than other children or that we were going to be perfect. Our parents just knew they wanted more for us.
Growing up I always heard Proverbs 18:21, “death and life are in the power of the tongue and those who love it will eat its fruit.” I didn’t really take it seriously until I got older. Although during high school, the life mama spoke over me wouldn’t allow me to feel right taking part in the wrong things even when I tried. No matter what I did, I always had that guilty conscience and that reminder of what she said.
It wasn’t until I was 21 years old that what she said hit home. As I built my relationship with God, He started to reveal and speak to me in many ways. I finally understood that if it wasn’t for my mom first giving me to God and speaking over me as a child by faith, I wouldn’t have been able to let go of my old ways and walk into what God has for me.
Speaking life and not death deals with faith too. Faith is being sure of what we hoped for and certain of what we don’t see. We never know if it will happen but hope, prayer, and trust in God that if it’s His desire it will. So I’m reminding you to speak positive, kindness, and life over yourself and others because power is in our tongue. My mother is a good demonstration. She didn’t know what the outcome of our lives would be once we left home, but she always remained faithful and trusted God that He had his hands on us. She spoke positive things over us and still to this day stops us when we speak negative of ourselves.
It starts with the small because if we don’t believe the small things can happen then how will we have faith that the big things, that sound crazy, can happen?
Examples are: “I’m so stupid,” “I can’t do this,” or “I’m broke.” Those types of sayings can affect us and we do not even know it. We have to have faith that God can help us be able to stop in our tracks and speak life(positive) and not death.
Change starts with awareness. I’m guilty of this myself so together we can do this. Let’s just focus on catching the small negative things we say to ourselves and try to stop it. Remember we aren’t perfect so we may always slip up but immediately say “I rebuke that in the name of Jesus.”
Let’s start somewhere:
- “Our tongues will build each other up and not tear each other down.”
- “I can do anything I put my mind to.”
